Mr. Kashinath. A. Divecha

Mr. Kashinath Divecha has been a trade unionist for more than 50kashi years. His career started when he was working for one of the Tata Group of Companies, Investa Machine Tools & Engineering Co Ltd in Bombay. When this company closed down in early 1960s, as a young enthusiast, he took leading part in securing the Gratuity benefit for his co-workers, through an award of the Industrial Tribunal. As the Payment of the Gratuity Act was enacted only in 1972, it was in addition to all other statutory entitlements and dues payable then. It was an achievement in as much as it was literally snatched from the hands of reluctant management.
Mr. Divecha had a close and long association with Mr. S.R. Mohan Das, who is the Founder Director of the Industrial Relations Institute of India, and who has been acknowledged as unquestioned expert and authority in the field of Industrial Relations in India.

After his tutelage under Mr. Mohan Das, Mr. Divecha joined the strong and powerful union of Indian Seafarers, namely, National Union of Seafarers of India (NUSI) in mid-1970s. NUSI is a unique trade union as it is run as a disciplined organization in respect of all its functions, not only with its membership, but also in its dealings with shipowners at industrial as well as company levels, apart from interacting with the various establishments of the government. It has its own financial stability unmatched by any other union organization in India.

Here he was associated with NUSI General Secretary, the veteran trade union leader, Dr. Leo Barnes. Being an acclaimed leader of the seafarers of India, Dr. Barnes represented not only Indian seamen but also seamen from all over the world at several international forums such as International Labour Organisation (ILO), International Maritime Organisation (IMO), UNCTAD and so on. Mr. Divecha was the Public Relation Officer of NUSI. This post is unique in the sense that no union in India has ever thought of bringing its achievements to the notice of the other sections of the society, whereas for NUSI, it is a historical tradition of having a PRO.

Mr. Divecha, who is at present associated with the Industrial Relations Institute of India, is a prolific reader and writer on many issues of national concern and also in the field of Industrial Relations.
